Tom Cherrett is a Professor of Logistics and Transport Management at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. He leads the Transportation Research Group and coordinates the SUCCESS Scholarship Scheme. His career spans academic roles since 1994, including Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and current Professor since 2015. He holds a Ph.D. in Transportation (1998) and B.Sc. in Transport Management (1991).
Research focuses on urban freight distribution, optimization techniques, intelligent transport systems (e.g., smartphone applications for logistics), and waste management strategies. Notable projects include EU-funded CITYLAB (urban logistics), Southampton Delivery and Servicing Plans (sustainable freight strategies), and Solent Future Transport Zone (multi-disciplinary urban mobility).
His work includes developing a prototype app for Oxfam to optimize volunteer driver logistics and exploring drone applications for healthcare and waste management. Awards include the 2009 Best Paper at the Logistics Research Network Conference for work on hazardous waste logistics.
