About
Dr Toby Davidson is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities at Macquarie University and a core member of the Global Indigenous Futures Research Centre. His transdisciplinary work bridges poetry scholarship, creative practice, and digital humanities, with sustained focus on Australian literary traditions and their societal intersections.
His educational foundation includes a Graduate Diploma of Education (2014) from Macquarie University, a PhD in English Literature (2009) from Deakin University, and a First-Class Honours BA in English and History (1999) from the University of Western Australia.
Davidson's research centers on Australian poetry's intersections with mental health, Christian mysticism, and public commemoration. His expertise in Francis Webb positions him as Australia's leading scholar on this post-WWII poet, while his archival work on John Curtin's poetic engagements reveals unexpected dimensions of political leadership. The transdisciplinary 'Words in Place' project exemplifies his innovative fusion of literary studies with geospatial technology to map writers' commemorative sites across Australian capitals.
Recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate deepening engagement with Australian poetic identity, spanning critical analyses of Webb's legacy, contemporary poetry collections reflecting post-pandemic realities, and digital humanities applications. These outputs consistently explore how poetry mediates historical trauma, spiritual experience, and national identity formation.
Major recognitions include:
- Shortlisting for the 2015 ASAL Walter McRae Russell Award
- Winner of the 2007 Verandah Penguin Literary Award
- Shortlisting for the 2016 Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize
- Special Commendation in the 2021 Wesley Michel Wright Prize
Davidson has supervised over thirty postgraduate theses while coordinating community initiatives like the annual Francis Webb Poetry Reading. His research grants include the 'Words in Place' project (2014-2015) and its expansion (2015), funded through Macquarie University, which developed the first interactive digital cartography of Australian writers' commemorative sites.
He leads collaborative teams within the Global Indigenous Futures Research Centre and has directed transdisciplinary projects involving geographers, digital humanities specialists, and community stakeholders to create publicly accessible resources that transform literary scholarship into civic engagement tools.
