Tobias Matter leads the 'Extended Spaces' research team exploring mixed reality applications for participatory design processes. His work develops hybrid methods that blend physical and digital interactions to engage communities in urban planning and cultural heritage contexts.

Current projects include augmented reality tools for climate-resilient urban design and multisensory interfaces for public space co-creation. Matter integrates research directly into spatial design pedagogy, guiding students in developing XR-enhanced spatial concepts that address societal challenges.

His doctoral research at HafenCity University Hamburg investigates AR as a co-design tool for democratic urban planning processes, creating frameworks for inclusive stakeholder engagement through immersive technologies.
