University of New England AustraliaAbout
Dr. Timothy Schaerf is an Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of New England, specializing in mathematical biology. With a BSc (Honors) and PhD from the University of Sydney, his research examines collective animal behavior—particularly honeybee nest-site selection and fish shoaling dynamics. He coordinates Mathematics and Statistics disciplines at UNE.
Current projects include rugby collective state analysis (2025) and predator-prey interactions in fish shoals. His ARC Discovery Grant (2019-2021) supported studies on animal movement. Recent publications cover krill swarm organization, bee density estimation, and computational models of group behavior.
Dr. Schaerf teaches computational mathematics, differential equations, and calculus. He supervises multiple PhD students investigating dung beetle ecology, invasive species modeling, and Antarctic krill movement.
