Timothy Renner

Timothy Renner is a Professor of Classics and General Humanities at Montclair State University, within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds multiple administrative roles, including Director of the Center for Heritage and Archaeological Studies, Coordinator of the Interdepartmental Minor in Archaeology, and co-advisor for the MSU Latin/Teacher Education Program. His academic background includes degrees from Yale University (BA), and the University of Michigan (MA, PhD).

Renner earned his Bachelor of Arts from Yale University, followed by a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in Classics from the University of Michigan.

His research focuses on the history and archaeology of Roman imperial villas, particularly the 'Villa degli Antonini' in Italy, and their societal context. He also studies ancient historiography, papyrological evidence for Egyptian rebellions, and the role of imperial slaves and freedmen in Roman documents. His work contributes to understanding Greco-Roman and early Arab Egypt through his editorial role at the Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists.

His research outputs include studies on archaeological excavations, such as the 2011 paper detailing the first season of the Villa degli Antonini project, reflecting his focus on Roman imperial villas and field methodologies.

Renner advises the Latin/Teacher Education Program with Mary C. English and has coordinated academic programs. His fieldwork and administrative leadership include directing the Center's excavations and managing interdisciplinary initiatives.

He co-directs the 'Villa degli Antonini' Project, part of the Center for Heritage and Archaeological Studies, which conducts excavations in Genzano di Roma, Italy.
