University of Arkansas for Medical SciencesAbout
Timothy R. Koscik, Ph.D. serves as an Associate Professor in Neurology within the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, conducting research through Arkansas Children's Hospital, which is nationally ranked in seven pediatric specialties for 2024-2025.
Dr. Koscik's research focuses on mesoscale neuroanatomy, bridging the gap between micro-scale neuronal structures and macro-scale brain networks. His work employs ultra-high-resolution neuroimaging of postmortem human brains at approximately 150 microns resolution—300 to 1,000 times more detailed than typical 1 mm3 neuroimaging—to study cortical laminar architecture and its role in both normal brain function and disease processes.
His current research investigates how maladaptive development of cortical lamina may drive Huntington's disease pathology, particularly examining how failed neuronal migration into normal laminar patterns leads to cortical circuit hyperexcitability and subsequent neurodegeneration through excitotoxic pathways. This work combines advances in scan acquisition, image processing, and deep learning technologies to explore mesoscale neuroanatomy with unprecedented detail and throughput.
Dr. Koscik's ultimate research goal is to provide novel insights that will guide therapeutic agents to appropriate neuroanatomical targets and deliver these therapeutics at developmental stages optimal for rectifying underlying pathology in neurodegenerative conditions.
