Neale's research investigates the intersection of environmental management, Indigenous knowledge systems, and technological infrastructures. His work addresses how colonial legacies shape contemporary land practices and how technical systems mediate human-environment relations. Current projects analyze wildfire prediction technologies, carbon economies, and collaborative governance models in disaster contexts.
Recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on environmental governance, Indigenous sovereignty, and STS approaches to disaster management. Articles explore cultural fire practices, predictive mapping technologies, and the ethical dimensions of collaborative research. Common themes include the politics of knowledge production, institutional adaptation, and decolonizing methodologies.
Current doctoral supervisions include projects on Indigenous governance of cultural land management, multispecies relations in urban environments, and energy transition politics. Grants include:
- ARC Discovery Project: Embedding Net Zero Carbon Emissions (2025-2027, $406,298)
- NHRA: Community engagement for vegetation management (2024-2026, $262,298)
- NHRA: Cultural land management research (2022-2024, $154,250)
As former Convener of the Deakin Science and Society Network (2020-2023), Neale fostered interdisciplinary collaborations on science-society relations. He produces academic podcasts (Conversations in Anthropology, Technoscience) that extend research impact beyond traditional publications.
