Timothy Moore

Timothy J. Moore is the John and Penelope Biggs Distinguished Professor of Classics and Chair of the Department of Classics at Washington University in St. Louis. He holds affiliate faculty positions in the Performing Arts Department and the Comparative Literature and Thought programs. Moore earned his PhD in Classics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has held visiting professorships in Germany and fellowships at prestigious institutions including the American Academy in Rome. His research focuses on ancient music, Greek and Roman theatre, and historiography, with notable projects including an online database of meters in classical drama and studies on musical theatre in antiquity.

Moore's teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, blending ancient texts with modern performance studies. He has pioneered pedagogical methods using music to teach meter and ancient languages. His recent publications explore ludic elements in ancient theatre, Roman comedy metrics, and comparative analyses of ancient and modern performance traditions. He has directed NEH summer institutes and co-authored influential volumes on Plautus and Menander.
