Timothy Matovina

Timothy Matovina is a Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters. Specializing in Faith and Culture, his work focuses on U.S. Catholicism and Latino/a theology. He holds a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America.

His research explores Latino/a Catholic identities, the historical evolution of U.S. Catholicism, and the intersection of theology with cultural dynamics. Key contributions include analyzing Guadalupe theology across centuries, Vatican II’s local impacts, and the transformative role of Latino communities within the Catholic Church.

Matovina has authored over 150 essays, 20 books, and co-edited major volumes. His work *Latino Catholicism* earned five awards, including a CHOICE honor. He received the Virgilio Elizondo Award (2010) for theological excellence.

Award-winning educator, he holds the Julian Samora Award from Notre Dame’s La Alianza for advancing Latino/a student success. Engages widely in ministry training and academic presentations on Latino religious life.
