Timothy M. Frye

Timothy M. Frye is the Marshall D. Shulman Professor of Post-Soviet Foreign Policy at the Harriman Institute, Columbia University, within the Department of Political Science. His work centers on the politics of corruption, autocracy, and economic development, with a regional focus on Russia and Eurasia. He is currently working on a book about voter mobilization under autocracy and recently completed a manuscript titled Weak Strongman: The Limits of Power in Putin's Russia.

His research explores the dynamics of autocratic governance, highlighting parallels between Russia and other autocracies in areas like election fraud, repression, propaganda, and foreign policy. Recent projects include surveys on how exposure to war costs influences public support for the state in Russia and Ukraine.

Scientific awards include the Marshall D. Shulman Professorship and the Chair in US-Russia Relations at the Library of Congress. He has contributed to journals such as American Politics Research and Political Science Quarterly, analyzing topics ranging from partisan appeals in aid to Ukraine to the impact of the January 6th insurrection on U.S. political support. Frye also serves as Editor of Post-Soviet Affairs.
