Timothy Joseph is a Professor of Classics and Director of the Peace and Conflict Studies program at the College of the Holy Cross. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and has served as Classics Department Chair, director of Montserrat’s Divine Cluster, and president of the Classical Association of New England (2022-23). His research focuses on Latin historiography (especially Tacitus), epic poetry (Virgil, Lucan), and the reception of Classics in modern U.S. contexts. Notable works include Tacitus the Epic Successor (2012), Thunder and Lament (2022), and co-edited Divided Worlds? (2023). He teaches courses like Tacitus, Nature in the Classical World, and Nation & Individual: Virgil. Joseph collaborates across disciplines, bridging Classics with Peace Studies and New Testament Studies. His scholarship emphasizes intertextuality, memory studies, and the political dimensions of ancient literature.
Joseph’s academic service includes leadership roles in curriculum development and professional organizations. His recent work explores how classical narratives address conflict, identity, and power dynamics both in antiquity and modern contexts.
