Timothy J. Shaw

Timothy J. Shaw is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of South Carolina, affiliated with the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on trace element geochemistry and environmental analytical chemistry, particularly in marine and freshwater systems.

• Education: B.S. (1981) from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; Ph.D. (1988) from the University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Shaw investigates factors controlling trace element exchange between dissolved, particulate, and biogenic phases, with a focus on reactive oxygen species generation in hydrothermal plumes and coastal environments. His work involves developing advanced analytical techniques for trace element analysis and maintaining specialized facilities including a clean room and radiochemical analysis laboratories.

His research spans NSF-funded projects on groundwater-seawater interfaces and iron oxidation impacts on harmful algae growth. Collaborations include Dr. John Ferry's group for environmental chemistry studies and Dr. Ken Smith at MBARI for Southern Ocean carbon sequestration research.
