About
Timothy Insoll is the Al-Qasimi Professor of African and Islamic Archaeology at the University of Exeter since 2016. Previously, he held professorial roles at the University of Manchester (2004-2016) and was a Research Fellow at St John's College, Cambridge (1995-1998).
His research focuses on African archaeology, Islamic archaeology, and the archaeology of religion. He has conducted fieldwork across Ethiopia, Ghana, and Bahrain, including an ERC Advanced Grant project on Islamisation in Eastern Ethiopia.
Scientific awards include:
- OBE (2025) for services to archaeology in Bahrain and UK/Bahrain relations
- Fellow of the British Academy (2023)
- ERC Advanced Grant (2016-2022)
- Fellowships at Royal Asiatic Society (2002) and Society of Antiquaries (2001)
He serves as Honorary Archaeological Advisor to the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain since 2001, was Honorary Curator for Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (2011-2013), and held visiting professorships at Jinka University (2015-2019) and other institutions.
