Timothy Hsu

Timothy Hsu is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at San José State University (SJSU), part of the College of Science. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University (1994), with prior teaching experience at the University of Michigan and Pomona College before joining SJSU in 2001. His research focuses on algebra and combinatorics, including geometric group theory, partially ordered sets, l² (co)homology, sporadic finite simple groups, and modular/braid groups. He is also the author of a textbook, Fourier Series, Fourier Transforms, and Function Spaces: A Second Course in Analysis (AMS/MAA, 2023).

Dr. Hsu teaches a wide range of courses, including analysis, discrete mathematics, abstract algebra, and calculus. He has advised numerous master's and senior theses, with examples listed on his website. His office is in MacQuarrie Hall 316, and he can be reached via email at tim.hsu@sjsu.edu. During non-sabbatical terms, his office hours are typically held Monday-Thursday 9am-12:30pm and 1:30pm-4pm, and Friday 9am-12:30pm. He currently serves as the SJSU Math/Stats Colloquium chair and previously directed the Center for Applied Mathematics, Computation, and Statistics (CAMCOS).
