Timothy Hatton is an Emeritus Professor of Economics at the Australian National University (ANU), affiliated with the Crawford School of Public Policy. He also holds an Emeritus Professor title at the University of Essex (UK). His research focuses on economic history and applied economics, particularly migration, labor markets, and public policy. He has authored influential books like Global Migration and the World Economy and Seeking Asylum in the OECD.
Education: PhD in Economics from the University of Warwick (1982). Awards include the Clio Can (2012) and Fellowships from multiple academies. He has led initiatives such as the ANU’s Centre for Economic History and served as editor of the European Review of Economic History.
Research interests span international migration drivers, asylum policy, and historical health metrics. His recent work explores migration in the Atlantic economy (1850–1940) and Australia’s assisted immigration policies (1860–1913). Collaborative projects include studies on China’s adult height trends and the political economy of U.S. immigration legislation.
