About
Timothy Dunn is an Assistant Professor at Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering with additional appointments in Neurobiology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Neurosurgery. His research integrates machine learning, computer vision, and neurobiology to study neural circuits, animal behavior, and traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes in both high-resource and low-resource settings.
Dr. Dunn earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Harvard University (2015) and has been recognized with awards including the McKnight Foundation's Technological Innovations in Neuroscience Award (2021) and IBM's AI Watson XPrize Finalist (2017). His teaching includes graduate and undergraduate courses in biomedical and electrical engineering.
- Research Focus: 3D behavioral kinematic modeling, TBI outcome prediction systems, neurosurgical decision support tools, and cross-species neural profiling using geometric deep learning.
- Recent Publications (2022-2025): 15+ works on 3D pose estimation, machine learning in neurosurgery, and neural connectivity inference, with applications to Parkinson's disease and zebrafish locomotion.
Scientific accolades include multiple Harvard teaching awards (2013, 2017), NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (2010), and UC Berkeley's Chaikoff Award (2008). He actively recruits Ph.D. students and technicians for his Dunn Lab.
