Timea Tihanyi is a Teaching Professor in Interdisciplinary Visual Art at the University of Washington. Her practice spans studio-based explorations in ceramics, sculpture, and digital craft, alongside interdisciplinary collaborations with scientists, mathematicians, and technologists. She holds a Doctor of Medicine from Semmelweis University (1993), an MFA in Ceramics from the University of Washington (2003), and a BFA in Ceramics from Massachusetts College of Art (1998).
Her research focuses on knowledge-making processes through art, blending scientific, philosophical, and cultural inquiries. Notable projects include the Scientia Library Project (2017), a participatory installation with bone china books, and Open for Construction (2012), a clay-centric participatory exhibition. She founded Slip Rabbit Studio in 2017, a digital ceramics research space fostering innovation and community mentorship.
Key awards include the 2017 4Culture Tech Specific Grant and 2018 Neddy Award in Open Media. Her work explores intersections between art, mathematics, and the human body, with installations such as Bornholm Project (2010) and Outside In, Inside Out (2008). She mentors through the Husky Leadership Certificate program and Slip Rabbit’s internship/residency initiatives.
