Dr Tim Stuart-Buttle is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of York. He joined the department as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in 2017 and transitioned to his current role in 2020. His work bridges early modern European intellectual history, political thought, and moral philosophy, with a focus on the interplay between classical traditions and Christian theology.
Research Interests: His scholarship examines the evolution from natural jurisprudence to political economy, the transnational movement of ideas, and the role of esteem and recognition in shaping civil society. He has published extensively on Cicero’s influence on philosophers like Locke and Hume, and his current monograph project extends this analysis from Hobbes to Hegel.

Supervision: Tim supervises PhD projects in the history of political thought and early modern intellectual history, currently guiding Michael Liu on John Locke’s Christian philosophy.
