Tim Smith is Professor in Data Science at University of the Arts London's Creative Computing Institute. He directs the Cognition in Naturalistic Environments (CINE) Lab studying relationships between media and cognition across human development.
Using multimodal methods (eye tracking, EEG, fNIRS), his research examines frame-by-frame media effects and longitudinal media exposure impacts. Current projects investigate social VR cognition, media attention development in children, and narrative processing. Funded research includes UKRI's Animated Minds project and Nuffield Foundation's Screen Time Intervention study.
He supervises doctoral research on procedural 3D scene generation and AI-enhanced accessibility in gaming.
