Tim Patterson is an Associate Professor in Sustainability Analysis at the University of South Wales' Sustainable Environment Research Centre, within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science. He holds a PhD in Life Cycle Analysis of Renewable Hydrogen and Methane (2013) and a BSc in Physical Geography (1995). His research focuses on evaluating sustainable technologies, particularly renewable energy systems and low-carbon materials, using Life Cycle Assessment and systems analysis. He emphasizes practical integration of novel technologies into industrial practices to enhance environmental and economic sustainability.
Dr. Patterson has extensive private sector experience as an environmental consultant, influencing his pragmatic approach to modeling complex systems and proposal writing. He teaches sustainability, waste management, and energy topics across MSc programs and supervises PhD students. His funded projects include BioGrid (BEIS), SMART CIRCLE (ERDF), and AERIOGEN (ICURe), focusing on energy storage, circular economies, and biogas innovation.
Key research interests include anaerobic digestion, biogas upgrading, and carbon capture technologies. He received the 2019 2nd Prize poster Award and leads the 2024 Feasibility of Gaseous Conversions project. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly climate action and industrial innovation.
