Dr. Tim Mawson holds the roles of Dean, Edgar Jones Fellow, and Tutor in Philosophy at St Peter’s College, University of Oxford. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Philosophy, specializing in Philosophy of Religion, Moral Philosophy, Ethics, and Aesthetics. His research focuses on the philosophical exploration of life's meaning, particularly the interplay between religious belief and existential purpose, as exemplified in his 2016 book God and the Meanings of Life.
Education: Began at St Peter’s College, continued at The Queen’s College (Oxford), and held temporary lectureships before returning to St Peter’s in 1998. His teaching emphasizes the Oxford tutorial system, covering topics like Utilitarianism, Ethics, and Aesthetics. As Dean, he oversees disciplinary matters through the Decanal Team, collaborating with the Welfare Team for student support.
Research Interests: Explores philosophical inquiries into life’s meaning, the philosophy of religion, and value theory. His work challenges historical neglect of the ‘meaning of life’ question in professional philosophy, advocating for its growing academic relevance.
Teaching and Advising: Mentors students at St Peter’s and other colleges, including the BPhil and MSt/MPhil in Philosophical Theology programs. Advocates for rigorous critical dialogue in tutorials, rooted in Socratic tradition.
