Tim Laing is a Senior Lecturer in Economics, Course Leader for the BSc Economics programme, and a member of the Centre for Change, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management (CENTRIM). He holds a PhD in Environmental Economics from the London School of Economics, a MA in Development Economics from the University of Sussex, and a BA in Economics from the University of Nottingham.

Laing's research focuses on the intersection of environmental protection and economic development, particularly natural resource management (forests, minerals, water) and policy instruments like emissions trading schemes (EU ETS, CDM). He explores how private-sector engagement can address resource management challenges and investigates the material implications of low-carbon transitions, including the role of minerals and blockchain in carbon markets.
His recent publications highlight trends in artisanal mining, REDD+, carbon offsetting, and solar energy policy, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to climate and resource economics.
Laing supervises students in renewable energy, sustainable production, and technology innovation. He has collaborated with organizations such as Climate Strategies, Conservation International, WWF, and the World Bank on projects related to emissions trading, REDD+, and mineral resource management for low-carbon development.
He contributes to policy-relevant research through knowledge exchange initiatives and serves on the editorial board of Extractive Industries and Society.
