About
Tim Hopkins is a Principal Research Fellow in Music at the University of Sussex's School of Media, Arts and Humanities. With a professional background spanning opera direction, music theatre, scenic design, and moving image production, he joined Sussex in 2007 as an AHRC Fellow in the Creative and Performing Arts. His research explores opera as both technological adventure and societal forum, connecting historical and contemporary practices to examine the cultural, emotional, and political impacts of technological transformation.
His research interests focus on digital media applications in opera, particularly intermedial relationships enabled by new technologies. Recent work emphasizes Augmented and Virtual Reality, robotics, AI in performance contexts, and film responses to contemporary classical recordings. He has developed significant projects including Empathy Machine (exploring VR for conflict resolution through participatory opera) and Robot Opera (investigating humanoid robots in operatic contexts).
His publications demonstrate a clear trajectory toward integrating emerging technologies with traditional performance forms. The most recent works show increasing sophistication in applying AI, robotics, and immersive technologies to opera and music theatre, reflecting his ongoing exploration of how technology transforms artistic expression and audience engagement. His film responses to classical recordings represent a contemporary extension of the mid-20th century 'visual music' movement.
