Tim B. Castillo is a Professor of Architecture and Director of Community Engagement Initiatives at the University of New Mexico (UNM), leading the School of Architecture and Planning. He also directs the Historical Preservation Program and曾 served as Associate Dean (2016-2019) and Director of the ARTS Lab (2008-2016). His work bridges digital innovation, rural community development, and cultural preservation. He holds an M.Arch from Columbia University and a B.A.A. from UNM.
Research focuses on emergent technologies like VR, digital fabrication, and design thinking, applied to rural challenges. Key projects include the Finding Rural/Plata Studio and the Santa Fe Collaborative initiative. He has secured over $5M in grants from NSF, NPS, NEA, and others, addressing rural ceramics, AR in parks, and community economic development.
Awards include the AIA Albuquerque Merit Award (2019), Academy of Interactive Arts Silver Award (2016), and IDMAa recognition (2013). His work is exhibited globally, including at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia and the Pavillon de l’Arsenal.
Teaching includes courses on design thinking, rural innovation, and emergent technologies. He leads the Virtual New Mexico Project and collaborates with regional institutions to integrate technology into community-driven solutions.
