Dr. Tilo Grätz is a Research Associate at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies, Freie Universität Berlin. He holds a habilitation (Dr. phil.habil.) and teaches courses in Media Studies, Media Anthropology, Political Anthropology, Anthropology of Migration, Technologies, Risk and Security, Memory Studies, and social relations and cultural change.
His research focuses on communication practices and political culture in West Africa, with current projects examining participatory radio shows in Benin. Previous research includes studies on small-scale gold mining and media appropriation in West Africa. His work is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG project GR 1724/12-1 running until 2026).
Key publications include monographs on West African media cultures and edited volumes on African societal transformations.
