Tillman Nechtman

Tillman Nechtman is a Professor in the History Department at Skidmore College. He holds a Ph.D. in British Imperial History from the University of Southern California (2005) and has been part of Skidmore's faculty since Fall 2005. His academic journey includes a Bachelor of Science of Foreign Service from Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (1997), a Master's in Domestic British History from Claremont Graduate University (1999), and a second Master's in British Imperial History from the University of Southern California (2002).

Professor Nechtman specializes in the cultural dynamics of the British Empire, particularly focusing on interactions between Britain and India during the eighteenth century. His recent work extends this analysis to the global Pacific Ocean, emphasizing the interconnectedness of imperial histories.

His notable publications include the books Nabobs: Identity and Empire in Eighteenth-Century Britain (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and The Pretender of Pitcairn Island: Joshua W. Hill, the Man Who Would Be King Among the Bounty Mutineers (Cambridge University Press). His research has also appeared in journals like History Compass, The Journal of Women's History, and The Journal of Eighteenth-Century Studies.
