Thomas Schmidt is an Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary 3D Studio and Digital Fabrication at the University of North Carolina Charlotte’s College of Arts + Architecture. He holds a BA from Loyola University Chicago (2004), Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2006), and MFA from Alfred University’s New York State College of Ceramics (2009). His work bridges traditional ceramics with digital fabrication, focusing on sustainability and industrial waste.
Research interests include material innovation through 3D scanning, laser-sintered glazes, and repurposing industrial waste. He co-founded Recycled China (2012), transforming discarded ceramics into architectural tiles and sculptures. Notable projects include the Duke Energy Plaza installation (2024) and the Modular Vase Series (2018). His work is featured in collections like the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche.
Exhibitions span the U.S., Europe, and Asia, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches blending art, design, and technology. He has held teaching roles in the U.S. and China, including at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
