Prof. Thomas Pietschmann is the Head of the Department of Experimental Virology at TWINCORE, Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, and Scientific Co-Director of the Helmholtz program 'Infection Research'. He holds a PhD from the University of Würzburg and has led research groups focused on HCV, RSV, and coronaviruses since 2006.
His research explores viral pathogenesis, immune evasion, and antiviral strategies. Key interests include:
- HCV vaccine development and immune protection mechanisms
- RSV pathogenesis in vulnerable populations
- Broad-spectrum coronavirus antivirals
His recent publications (2024-2025) focus on neutralizing antibodies, viral replication mechanisms, and repurposed antivirals, demonstrating consistent emphasis on translational virology and pandemic preparedness.
He leads a team of 20+ researchers, including 5 PhD students, and has secured funding from ERC, DZIF, and NIH for developing animal models and high-throughput antiviral screens.
