Thomas Pangle is Professor and Joe R. Long Chair in Democratic Studies at the Department of Government, College of Liberal Arts, The University of Texas at Austin. He co-directs the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Study of Core Texts and Ideas. Before joining UT in 2004, he held the University Professorship at the University of Toronto’s Political Science Department. A lifetime Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he has delivered prestigious lectures including the Exxon Distinguished Lectures at the University of Chicago and the Werner Heisenberg Memorial Lecture in Munich.

His research spans classical political philosophy, Enlightenment foundations of modernity, postmodern theory, and the intersection of political theology and philosophy. He has authored and co-authored seminal works on Plato, Aristotle, Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Nietzsche, with recent articles exploring Hegel’s philosophy of nature, Strauss’s interpretations, and the moral basis of international relations.
Recent publications include analyses of Nietzsche’s Twilight of the Idols, Hegel’s Encyclopedia of Philosophical Sciences, and Rousseau’s Reveries of the Solitary Walker. His work systematically engages texts to uncover their ontological and ethical implications for contemporary political thought.

Pangle’s teaching includes courses on Might and Right Among Nations (CTI 323) and Political Philosophy of Marx and Engels (GOV 382M).
