Tom Miller was a Senior Continuing Lecturer in Communication at UCLA and director of the Speech and Debate team until his passing in January 2021. He earned his bachelor’s in mass communication from UCLA and a master’s in speech communication from Cal State Northridge. For over 40 years, Miller taught communication courses and led the UCLA debate team to nine national championships.
Miller specialized in promoting reasoned argument as foundational to democratic processes, teaching principles of clear and confident communication. He consulted on the film 'Listen to Me' (1989) about a national championship debate team and served as a trial consultant during the O.J. Simpson murder trial.
In 2018, U.S. Rep. Ted Lieu recognized Miller’s teaching with a Certificate of Congressional Achievement. An accomplished musician, Miller also trained with the Maharishi in India, integrating spiritual enlightenment into his teaching philosophy.
