Thomas J. Whitmore is an Associate Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of South Florida’s College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on quantitative analyses of freshwater ecosystems, historical ecology, and paleolimnology, with 40+ years of work across Florida, Yunnan Province (China), and the Yucatan. He has contributed to state nutrient criteria policies and federal EPA litigation. He teaches courses on Limnology, Florida Ecosystems, and Plant Taxonomy.
Research highlights include climatic/human impacts on lakes, soil erosion in Chinese watersheds, sediment dynamics in wind-stressed lakes, and cyanobacterial community dynamics during eutrophication. He co-edited the Journal of Paleolimnology (2008–2022) and founded/moderates the International Paleolimnology Association’s listserv (800+ subscribers).
