Thomas Hou is the Bradley Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, with a courtesy appointment in Computer Science. His research focuses on wireless and mobile networks, including real-time optimization, spectrum sharing, and 5G/next-G communications. He holds a B.E. from The City College of New York (1991), M.S. from Columbia University (1993), and Ph.D. from NYU Tandon (1998). Before academia, he worked at Fujitsu Laboratories of America (1997–2002).
Research interests include wireless security, dynamic spectrum access, and algorithmic solutions for network bottlenecks. His work has led to innovations in throughput, delay, and energy optimization across network layers. He has published over 200 papers, including nine best-paper awards, and authored two textbooks: *Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks* (Elsevier, 2010) and *Applied Optimization Methods for Wireless Networks* (Cambridge, 2014).
- Professional Service: IEEE Fellow (2014), Chair of IEEE INFOCOM Steering Committee (2013–2019), IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer (2015–2018).
- Awards: NSF CAREER Award (2004), ONR Young Investigator (2003), Virginia Tech Dean's Research Excellence Award (2013).
- Editorial Roles: IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks, and others.
His contributions span blockchain sharding, federated learning security, and automotive radar interference mitigation. Current projects address real-time scheduling in 5G/6G, AI-driven cybersecurity, and spectrum-sharing frameworks like BD-SAS.
