Thomas Holman, Ph.D. is a Professor of Sport Management in the College of Allied Health, Kinesiology, & Sport Sciences at Southeast Missouri State University. With over 30 years of experience in teaching and outdoor leadership, he brings a deep commitment to experiential education and student-centered learning.

Research Interests:
Dr. Holman’s research is centered on the intersection of recreation and park administration, outdoor adventure education, and experiential learning. His work explores how structured outdoor experiences contribute to personal growth, educational outcomes, and community engagement. He has a particular focus on the value and impact of summer camp experiences from the perspectives of parents and participants.
His scholarly contributions are grounded in qualitative and applied research, often collaborating with practitioners and organizations in the field. His findings have been presented at national conferences and published in leading journals such as the Journal of Outdoor Recreation, Education, and Leadership.

Professional Involvement:
Dr. Holman serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Outdoor Recreation, Education, and Leadership, and is a Council Member for the Girardot Center for Youth and Families. He is also an active member of the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE), Association for Experiential Education (AEE), and Missouri Park and Recreation Association (MPRA).
Teaching Philosophy & Approach:
Dr. Holman’s teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in experiential education. He believes that students learn best when actively engaged in the learning process. His courses emphasize group projects, student-led instruction, and real-world application. He sees his role as a facilitator of understanding, helping students connect theory with lived experience.
