Thomas Hemmick

Thomas K. Hemmick is Distinguished Teaching Professor at Stony Brook University, specializing in experimental nuclear physics. A Fellow of the American Physical Society, he co-chaired the Particle-ID working group for the Electron-Ion Collider and developed novel detector technologies including the PHENIX RICH, Hadron Blind Detector, and sPHENIX TPC.

Research focuses on emergent properties of strongly interacting matter through:

• Quark-gluon plasma thermodynamics at RHIC
• Penetrating probes via e+/e- channels
• Color-glass condensate signatures
• Particle detector innovation for high-luminosity colliders

Recent work examines Debye screening in QGP via Upsilon state measurements and kinematic anisotropies in small collision systems. He leads detector development for sPHENIX and future EIC experiments, focusing on high-resolution tracking and Cherenkov imaging.
