Thomas Gremsl is a Universitätsprofessor (Professor) of Ethics and Social Theory at the Katholisch-Theologische Fakultät (Catholic Theological Faculty) of the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz. He leads the Institute for Theological Ethics and Social Ethics and directs the Ethics Lab at the 'siebenten fakultät' (Center for Society, Knowledge, and Communication) at Graz University. Additionally, he chairs the Ethics Commission of Graz University of Technology and is a Habilitation candidate at the Lucerne Graduate School in Ethics (ISE, University of Lucerne).
His research focuses on foundational Christian social ethics, digital ethics (including AI and socio-technical systems), media ethics, and football ethics. Recent work addresses social media, disinformation, and their impacts on democracy. He has led interdisciplinary projects, including a Smart Regulation-funded initiative on 'Emotional AI' and an EU Parliament-commissioned project on 'Neurorights' ethics. Professionally, he collaborates internationally with researchers across Europe.
Gremsl also engages extensively in volunteer work: he serves on the executive board of the Styrian Football Association as a referee observer, works as an emergency paramedic with the Red Cross in Vorau, and has led their local station since 2022.
