Thomas Emmel

Thomas Emmel was a renowned Professor and founding director of the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera & Biodiversity at the University of Florida. His work focused on Lepidoptera taxonomy, biodiversity, and the role of museum collections in understanding ecological changes. A species of butterfly, Cyllopsis tomemmeli, was named in his honor in 2018, recognizing his decades of contributions to entomology.

Emmel’s career began at age 8, collecting butterflies under his father’s guidance. He led expeditions in Mexico and became a pivotal figure in lepidopterist communities. His mentorship influenced researchers like Andrew Warren, and he emphasized the enduring value of museum specimens for future scientific inquiry.

His legacy includes the McGuire Center, the only institution dedicated solely to butterfly and moth research. Memorial gifts are directed to the Thomas C. Emmel Founding Director’s Endowment, supporting collections and biodiversity studies.
