Thomas D. Rogers

Thomas D. Rogers is a Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of History at Emory University, serving as Mentor Coordinator. He holds a B.A. from Williams College and a Ph.D. from Duke University. His research focuses on modern Latin American history, particularly Brazil, with an emphasis on labor and environmental history intertwined with agricultural modernization and biofuel policy.

Rogers explores the socioenvironmental consequences of Brazil’s 20th-century agricultural transformations, notably through his 2022 book Agriculture’s Energy: The Trouble with Ethanol in Brazil’s Green Revolution, analyzing the National Alcohol Program’s impacts. He co-authored The Perennial Alternative: The History of Ethanol in the U.S. and Brazil, to be published in 2025. Current research examines Brazil’s political and economic transitions post-military dictatorship (1970s–1990s), emphasizing working-class experiences.
