About
Dr. Thomas Canam chairs the Biological Sciences Department at Eastern Illinois University and is Professor at the Center for Clean Energy Research. His research develops sustainable bioenergy solutions using plant biotechnology and microbial pretreatment strategies.
Current projects focus on: 1) Engineering plant traits for enhanced bioethanol production; 2) Using fungi/bacteria for biomass pretreatment; and 3) Integrating bioenergy systems with agricultural waste streams. His work supports EIU's Renewable Energy Center initiatives through fundamental and applied research.
Recent publications examine plant-soil microbial interactions, wood decomposition mechanisms in tropical ecosystems, and microbial community effects on plant performance. His teaching spans molecular biology, bioenergy systems, and general biology.
