Thomas Barker is Honorary Associate Professor at the Australian National University's Research School of Humanities & the Arts. His research examines Southeast Asian screen industries through frameworks of cultural sociology, with particular focus on Indonesian cinema and transnational media flows.

Publications analyze creative industries policy formation, international co-productions, and representations of social issues in Southeast Asian film. His monograph Indonesian Cinema after the New Order traces industry transformations following political reforms.
