Professor Theunis Roux holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and is a Professor of Law at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he serves as Head of the School of Global & Public Law. Before moving to Australia in 2009, he was the founding director of the South African Institute for Advanced Constitutional, Public, Human Rights and International Law (SAIFAC). His research focuses on comparative constitutional law, particularly the politics of judicial review in new democracies, and he has contributed extensively to debates on constitutional populism, interdisciplinary legal research, and democratic transformation.

Research Interests: His work explores how constitutional courts in post-authoritarian societies like South Africa and Indonesia navigate political pressures while advancing democratic consolidation. He has analyzed the performance of the South African Constitutional Court in social transformation, the role of legal-professional culture in constitutional interpretation, and the challenges of operationalizing constitutional principles in practice.
Recent Publications: His recent scholarship includes analyses of the Mason Court’s historical institutionalist impact in Australia, Indonesia’s judicial review regime, and the emergence of constitutional populism in South Africa. He also co-edited a major commentary on South African constitutional law and served as a consultant to the South African government on land restitution and tenure reform.
