Dr. Theodore Curry is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Criminal Justice & Security Studies at the University of Texas at El Paso's College of Liberal Arts. He also serves as the Graduate Coordinator for the department. Dr. Curry earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from Washington State University in 2001.
His research examines the paradoxical relationship between immigration and crime, specifically investigating why immigrant neighborhoods exhibit lower crime rates despite socioeconomic disadvantages. Additional research interests include criminological theories, criminal justice systems with emphasis on gender and race/ethnicity, cultural protective factors against crime, and law enforcement-community dynamics. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation to collect data in El Paso testing theories about crime reduction in immigrant communities.
Analysis of Dr. Curry's recent publications reveals consistent focus on immigration-crime relationships, cultural influences on deviance, and theoretical applications to border studies. His work demonstrates methodological diversity including multi-level modeling, comparative analysis, and theoretical expansion across contexts ranging from family violence to cybercrime.
As Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Curry oversees graduate programs including the MS in Criminology and Criminal Justice. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including Criminology, Crime/Criminal Justice and Film, Communities and Crime, and Immigration/Crime and Criminal Justice.
