Terry Bryant

Terry Bryant serves as Division Director for Journalism and Senior Lecturer in American University's School of Communication, returning full-time in fall 2017 after prior stints at Mississippi State University and the University of Kansas. His dual career spans academia and broadcast media, including 12 years as reporter, videographer, meteorologist, and sports anchor at TV stations across Kansas, Mississippi, and California.

His educational background includes:

• BGS in Atmospheric Science from University of Kansas (1985)
• BS in Journalism, Broadcast News from University of Kansas (1986)
• MS in Education from University of Kansas (2000)

Bryant's research and teaching focus on practical journalism training through broadcast production, investigative reporting, and media writing. He emphasizes field experience, having led student reporting trips to Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria and conducted international workshops in Italy and Liberia. His courses like COMM-487 Advanced Broadcast Production and COMM-323 Raking the Muck integrate real-world scenarios with technical media skills.

As an advisor, Bryant directs student media projects including hurricane recovery reporting in Puerto Rico and NCAA sports coverage. His industry experience with CBS Sports, ESPN, and Fox Sports informs his teaching of live event production and broadcast ethics. He maintains active media engagement through AU's faculty expert program and journalism division leadership.
