Dr. Terence Heng is a Reader in Sociology at the University of Liverpool, affiliated with the School of Law and Social Justice within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. His expertise spans visual sociology, cultural geography, and diaspora studies. He holds an MSc from the University of Oxford and a PhD from Goldsmiths, University of London. His research focuses on Chinese diasporic identities, sacred space-making, and visual methods, with notable works including Visual Methods in the Field and Death and the Afterlife. He leads the British Academy-funded The Spirited North project, photographing overlooked spiritual spaces in Northern England. Awards include the Sir Alastair Pilkington Teaching Excellence Award (2020) and the IVSA Prosser Prize (2015). His teaching includes modules on documentary photography and death/spirituality studies. He is preparing a solo exhibition in Sheffield (June 2025) and co-editing Photographic Collections as Visual Method (2025).
