Tara Tober

Tara Tober is a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on navigating difficult pasts, including post-WWII memory in Ireland and contemporary analyses of mass shootings in America, with attention to media coverage and official responses. She teaches courses such as SOC1 - Introduction to Sociology and SOC134 – Social Movements.

Research Interests: Tara’s work bridges cultural sociology and historical inquiry. She examines how societies confront traumatic histories, such as Ireland’s post-war memory landscapes, and how institutions and media frame modern crises like mass shootings. Her current research highlights intersections of collective memory, inequality, and public policy.

Teaching: Tara instructs undergraduate and graduate courses in cultural theory, social stratification, globalization, and social movements, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to sociology.
