Tan Siew Ann

Dr. Tan Siew Ann (Harry) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and has been a registered Professional Engineer in Singapore since 1994, specializing in Geotechnical Engineering. His expertise includes numerical methods, deep excavations, pile foundations, and ground improvement.

Research Interests: Geotechnical numerical modeling, deep excavation stability, pile foundation mechanics, soil improvement techniques, and geotechnical instrumentation. He has conducted over 100 consultancy projects in Singapore and the region, including serving as Chairman of the State Expert Witness Team for the Nicoll Highway Tunnel Collapse inquiry (2004-2005).

Awards: Multiple teaching commendations (1998–2010), the IES Engineering Achievement Award (2000), and patents for drainage testing innovations in asphalt mixes (US Patent 6,367,310 B1 and Singapore Patents P-No.67286, PCT/SG99/00022).

Professional Activities: Member of ASCE, IES, and TRB committees (Sub-drainage for Highways and Airport Pavements). Editorial roles at Geotextiles and Geomembranes and Geotechnical Engineering journals. Active in Plaxis BV’s scientific advisory panels and international geotechnical societies like ISSMGE.

Teaching: Focuses on Earth Retaining Structures, Numerical Analysis in Geotechnics, and Slope Engineering. Known for innovative pedagogical methods recognized through teaching excellence awards.
