About
Assoc Prof Tan Kwan Wee is an Associate Professor at the School of Materials Science & Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), serving as Assistant Chair (Students and Alumni). He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University, and advanced degrees from MIT and NUS. His research focuses on nanomaterials, high entropy materials, and self-assembled hierarchical systems for sustainability and energy applications. Key contributions include advances in Joule heating processes for material synthesis and mesoporous alumina CO2 capture technologies.
Education: Ph.D. (Cornell University), M.Eng. (MIT), M.S. (National University of Singapore), B.Eng. (NTU). Postdoctoral research at Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology and Cornell University.
Research interests emphasize soft-chemistry approaches to functional materials, nonequilibrium phase transformations, and energy-related applications like hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). Notable achievements include being highlighted as an ACS Polymers Au Rising Star (2021) and collaborative work with Prof. Alfred Tok on high entropy alloy thin films.
Advising over 20 students, including Amber Kurkin (PhD) and April Li (PhD), with recent theses defended in 2023. Active in labs such as the SP Group-NTU Joint Laboratory and the RGE-SusTex Center. Utilizes advanced characterization facilities including X-ray diffraction and SEM.
