Talal Al-Azem

Dr Talal Al-Azem is a Lecturer in Classical Islam and Mohammed Noah Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, where he also serves as Fellow Librarian. He holds a BA in History and Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan, and MSt and DPhil from the University of Oxford's Faculty of Oriental Studies (2011). His research focuses on the social and intellectual history of the Muslim world, particularly medieval and early modern legal systems and educational institutions. He was awarded a Junior Research Fellowship at Pembroke College (2012) and contributed to the IMPAcT project (2014–15). He co-edits the Journal of Islamic Studies.

Research interests include Islamic law, moral theology, and the evolution of legal and educational institutions from late medieval to early modern periods. His publications explore topics like madhhab-law traditions, Mamluk legal practices, and Islamic educational philosophies.
