Dr. Tala Al-Rousan is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health & Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego. She is also an affiliate faculty in Geriatrics and an Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health. Her expertise lies in health equity, global health, and research on marginalized populations such as refugees, ethnic minorities, and mobile-home dwellers. Dr. Al-Rousan holds an MD from Cairo University, an MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Iowa, and postdoctoral training in Global Health (Harvard) and Brain Health Equity (UCSF).
Her research focuses on designing interventions to reduce health disparities, particularly through a human rights lens. Ongoing projects include hypertension self-management among refugees in San Diego and studies on dementia barriers in Syrian/Iraqi refugees. Internationally, she leads research on encampment impacts in Jordan/Lebanon and hypertension management in Peru/Malawi/Cameroon.
Dr. Al-Rousan has been recognized with the NIH K23 Award, Senior Atlantic Fellowship, and the American Journal of Public Health Award. She serves on WHO migration commissions and advisory boards, and actively mentors underrepresented students in academia.
