Takuma Itoh is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa's Department of Music since 2012. His work bridges contemporary classical traditions with cross-cultural elements, incorporating instruments like shakuhachi, koto, and electronic elements. He has held fellowships at the Mizzou International Composers Festival, Cabrillo Festival, and Copland House. Itoh earned degrees from Cornell University, University of Michigan, and Rice University under mentors including Steven Stucky and Bright Sheng.
His research focuses on orchestral composition, cultural hybridity, and acoustic-electronic fusion. Notable works include Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds (environmental advocacy), Faded Aura (shakuhachi integration), and Picture Brides (historical narrative). Over 50 compositions span orchestral, chamber, and solo genres.
Recipient of prestigious awards like the Charles Ives Scholarship and multiple ASCAP prizes, his music has been performed globally by ensembles like Alarm Will Sound and the Silesian Philharmonic. Current projects include a symphony about Hawaii's endangered bird species and collaborations with East Asian traditional instruments.
