- Bachelor of Engineering in Architecture, Tokyo University (1985)
- Master of Architecture, Harvard University (1987)
- Master of Engineering in Architecture, Tokyo University (1988)
- PhD, Harvard University (1996)
Nagakura's work bridges historical architectural analysis with cutting-edge technology, including the development of patented visualization devices like Digitarama and Multirama AR. His research on digital heritage employs photogrammetric modeling, drones, and game engines to preserve and interactively represent architectural landmarks such as Andrea Palladio's villas. He also co-led the UNBUILT project with Kent Larson, which digitally reconstructs unbuilt architectural designs by figures like Le Corbusier and Tatlin.
- SD Review Award (1998) for Gushikawa Orchid Center
- Nikkei New Office Award (1999) for Gushikawa Orchid Center
- Japan Information Culture Society Grand Prize (1999)
Nagakura has contributed to architectural education and practice through advisory roles, notably for Arcbazar.com, an online platform democratizing design via crowdsourcing. His career spans professional practice at Fumihiko Maki's firm in Tokyo and teaching experience at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design prior to joining MIT.
